River Levels Lower Than Expected

Last week, crowds gathered along the Colorado River to witness rising water levels. Fortunately, in Wharton and nearby areas, the river didn’t reach as high as feared, peaking at 38.6 feet instead of the predicted 43.2 feet. This spared residents from major flooding, even though heavy rainfall upstream caused swollen rivers and creeks.

Stolen Truck Chase Capture

Wharton County Sheriff’s Office stopped a stolen GMC Sierra on U.S. 59 South near Wharton on Thursday. The driver, 45-year-old Raubel Sanchez Jimenez, ran into the woods but was caught by K-9 “Thor”. Jimenez was arrested for evading arrest and unauthorized use of a vehicle, treated for minor leg injuries, and then taken to jail.

Reward Offered for Info

The Bay City Police are looking for leads on a shooting that happened at Joe’s Sports Bar on Sunday. A 19-year-old local woman was injured and is still in the hospital. There’s a reward for any solid info leading to an arrest. If you know something, call Detective Chris Cunningham at Bay City PD.

Big Investment in Future

Victoria College moves forward with a big investment in its future. Leaders and locals gathered Tuesday for a groundbreaking ceremony of the new student success center. The $10-million project will offer students resources like a library, advising, tutoring, and veteran services all in one place. Completion is expected by 2025

Lifters Shine at Meet

El Campo’s powerlifting team ranked third in a recent competition, with two members, Aidan Garcia and Camdyn Phillips, winning their weight classes. Garcia lifted a total of 1,390 pounds, including a 530-pound deadlift, while Phillips lifted a total of 1,420 pounds. Their victories contributed to El Campo’s overall score of 31 points.
