Wharton GOP Fundraiser

Wharton’s Republicans held a fundraiser on Thursday with food, an auction, and a talk by Sheriff Boyd. Auction items included a clock, a bench, a hat, and a fishing trip. The top items were a cooler and a pistol, fetching $850 and $2,400 respectively. The event ended with a speech by State Senator Huffman.

The Old Landmark Committee in Victoria honored Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a car ride from MLK Park to St. Peter’s Baptist Church. The event, usually a walk, saw Victoria residents braving the cold to show their respect for King. People of all ages and backgrounds gathered to honor King.

Mental Health Crisis

On Sunday morning, Victoria Police responded to a car crash near Zac Lentz Parkway. The driver, a 36-year-old man, seemed to be having a mental health crisis and had harmed himself with a weapon. WPD Citizens’ Academy

The Wharton Police Department is inviting applications for the WPD Citizens’ Police Academy. The deadline is March 29th, and classes start on April 9th at the Wharton Civic Center from 6 to 9 p.m. The academy aims to educate citizens about police work, helping attendees understand police practices and services better.

Bay City Independent School District has canceled school and extracurricular activities for today due to bad weather. The School Board Meeting will be rescheduled for a later date as well. Swim Team Prepares District

El Campo’s swim team is gearing up for the district meet on Friday. They had one more practice meet on Saturday. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have been improving, with many achieving personal bests. Last season, they made it to state and won district championships. The top swimmers are Julian Little and Kaden Beal.
