El Campo Closure Celebration

In the holiday spirit, the City of El Campo offices will be closed on Wednesday December 20th from 1 to 5 PM. It’s hardworking team will be celebrating Christmas together as a close-knit City family. They apologize for any inconvenience and will be back to regular office hours on Thursday.

Mourned Teen’s Tragic Loss

On Wednesday in Nebraska, friends and family mourned for Lizabeth Medina. A heartfelt service at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island drew many to bid farewell. Lizabeth lived in Grand Island until a year ago,when she moved Edna. A GoFundMe page has raised over $20,000 to support her loved ones.

Edna Murder Case Update

Police clarified details about the death of 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina. She was fatally stabbed in her Edna home on Dec. 5th. Rafael Romero, 23, is charged with her murder. Rural Counties Funding Approved

Matagorda County officials have approved applications for state funding through Senate Bill 22. This new law, effective from September 1st, aims to support law enforcement in 236 rural Texas counties with a $330 million grant. The funds will also help Matagorda County offer competitive pay to attract applicants.

Housing Project Update

Wharton City Council got updates on an affordable housing project. A2J Holdings President David Bowlin shared progress on the $500,000 sale of the old school at 500 Abell St., bringing taxable revenue for the first time in 88 years. The project aims for 34 residential units, pending government approval.

Wharton Man’s Bond Reduced

Caleb Joshua Moreno, a 20-year-old from Wharton, was arrested for alleged crimes related to a runaway teen. He faced charges like sexual assault and online solicitation of a minor. His bond was reduced from $515,000 to $55,000. He’s now out of jail.

Firefighters Brave Weekend Blazes

In El Campo over the weekend, volunteer firefighters tackled a house fire and two RV fires, ensuring everyone’s safety. Two firefighters got minor injuries during the effort. The house fire, caused by an electrical issue, was quickly contained, although it damaged much of the home. The homeowner escaped unharmed.
