Mega Drug Bust

Last Saturday, in Wharton County, the Texas DPS cops found 86 pounds of cocaine in a big truck on US 59. Wharton County Sheriff’s K9, ‘Kai,’ sniffed out the drugs hidden in the truck. Big thanks to the cops for keeping our neighborhoods safe from these drugs.

Bridge Renovations

Wharton County is renovating three bridges, and thanks to a new law, the state will cover all costs. Instead, the county will work on another bridge.. The total cost could be around $600,000 to $700,000. The resolution was passed unanimously by the county commissioners.

McAllister Honored

Harmon Jerome McAllister, the namesake of the now-demolished McAllister Jr. High, was honored with a Texas Historical Marker. The community gathered at the former school site, now Linnie Roberts Elementary, for the unveiling. McAllister, a dedicated educator, taught business administration at Bay City High School after earning his degree in 1933.

BBQ cook-off

The Wharton County Youth Fair is back with a BBQ cook-off this weekend. For the first time, there’s a margarita contest on Friday night. Saturday’s competition includes chili, beans, ribs, chicken, and brisket. Winners get cash prizes, with the top brisket cook winning $2,000. The overall winner gets a Texas-shaped cutting board. Promoted to Corporal

On Monday, Officer Jeromy Washington was promoted to Corporal at a ceremony in Bay City. He’s been with the department since 2020, earning several awards and recognitions. A Houston native, he’s a family man with five kids who enjoys fishing and country music. He became a cop to make a difference and inspire young people.

Tool Theft

Two women stole $1800 worth of tools from Porter’s ACE Hardware in Palacios last week, and were gone in just three minutes. The police have shared their photos and a picture of their white SUV. If you have any information, contact the Palacios Police Department.

Spelling Bee Champ

Lucas Lee, a 13-year-old from Travis Middle School, won the regional spelling bee for the second time, earning another trip to the national competition in Washington D.C. He outspelled competitors from six counties, and clinched the win by correctly spelling ‘apiary’. His dad, MingYung Lee, praised his hard work and confidence.

Big news for Ganado Indians

Big news for Ganado Indians: Dylan Holt, a star player is moving on to Howard Payne Yellow Jackets after graduation. He’s proud of his roots in Ganado and is confident that the team, which is retaining most of its players, will win the state championship next year. Congrats to Dylan on his next journey
