Promoted to Corporal

On Monday, Officer Jeromy Washington was promoted to Corporal at a ceremony in Bay City. He’s been with the department since 2020, earning several awards and recognitions. A Houston native, he’s a family man with five kids who enjoys fishing and country music. He became a cop to make a difference and inspire young people.

Tool Theft

Two women stole $1800 worth of tools from Porter’s ACE Hardware in Palacios last week, and were gone in just three minutes. The police have shared their photos and a picture of their white SUV. If you have any information, contact the Palacios Police Department.

Spelling Bee Champ

Lucas Lee, a 13-year-old from Travis Middle School, won the regional spelling bee for the second time, earning another trip to the national competition in Washington D.C. He outspelled competitors from six counties, and clinched the win by correctly spelling ‘apiary’. His dad, MingYung Lee, praised his hard work and confidence.

Big news for Ganado Indians

Big news for Ganado Indians: Dylan Holt, a star player is moving on to Howard Payne Yellow Jackets after graduation. He’s proud of his roots in Ganado and is confident that the team, which is retaining most of its players, will win the state championship next year. Congrats to Dylan on his next journey

No Water For You!

The Lower Colorado River Authority will not sell Highland Lakes water to most of its agricultural customers in Colorado, Wharton, and Matagorda counties in 2024 due to extreme drought conditions in Central Texas. This is the second year in a row that farmers are denied water because of drought.

Bus Assault Court Hearing

The court hearing for four former Industrial I.S.D. students accused of assault has been moved to Thursday, marking the second delay. Inappropriate Staff Terminated

A worker at Wharton ISD was fired for having an inappropriate relationship with a student. The school found out last week and suspended the worker, then let them go. They’re keeping details private for now. The superintendent says they’re still investigating. Student safety is their main concern.

Edna Murder Suspect

In Edna news, Rafael Romero, 23, accused of killing local cheerleader Lizbeth Medina, faces court arraignment Thursday. Jackson County indicted him last month. Romero allegedly caused Medina’s death during a burglary, robbery, or sexual assault attempt. He overstayed his work visa and was arrested five days after Medina’s tragic death.

Sexual Assault of a Child

El Campo Police arrested 30 year old John Aguilar on U.S. Highway 59 Saturday night. He’s accused of seven counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. Aguilar is now in Wharton County Jail with a $350,000 bond.
