Changes to livestock medication access

Starting June 11th, changes to how livestock medication is purchased will affect farmers and their animals. Over-the-counter antibiotics for both livestock and companion animals will now require a prescription, causing possible delays. This change follows a 2017 shift that made several animal feed and water antibiotics prescription-only. Producers with existing veterinary-client-patient relationships can purchase antibiotics from their vet or distributor with a prescription. Injectable antibiotics will still be available, but only with a prescription. This change could affect livestock owners’ access to antibiotic therapy for their animals.
