The Wharton County Heritage Partnership is working to save the historic Stephen F. Austin Elementary School, one of the last two ‘Little Schools of the 400’ in Texas. These schools, started in 1957, helped non-English-speaking kids succeed, reducing failure rates from 85% to less than 10%. The success of these schools influenced the creation of the Head Start program and ESL programs.
