The Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning incident in Selkirk. Vernon Weatherford, 56, was swept under the water while trying to retrieve a barge to move a vehicle across the Colorado River. Search efforts involved Texas Game Wardens and public members using boats. Weatherford’s body was recovered by game wardens with sonar technology. An autopsy was ordered by Judge Amy Tapia. This is the third reported drowning in the county. Authorities urge caution near water bodies during the summer.
