Man’s Death Sentence Possibly Overturned

A major paperwork error could spare El Campo’s Demond Bluntson from Texas’ Death Row, despite killing two young boys in ’12. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled jury instructions were flawed during his sentencing. Though convicted of capital murder, he now awaits a new punishment trial in Webb County. Bluntson was arrested after killing his girlfriend and her two sons in a Laredo hotel. His appeal cited mental illness and due process issues, but the court focused on the jury error, which violated his rights under the Eighth Amendment. A new sentencing phase is now pending.
