El Campo officers found a missing two-year-old Austin girl safe last Wednesday night. Police spotted a white Hyundai with flashers on along U.S. 59 near Highway 71 and soon learned it matched a vehicle in that day’s Amber Alert. The child was inside and unharmed. Officers arrested 25-year-old Kermit Zapata-Bernardez of New Orleans on an Austin kidnapping warrant. He’s now held in the Wharton County Jail on a $100,000 bond. The car was found about 130 miles from where the girl disappeared earlier that day in South Austin.
