Bible Reading Mandate for Public Schools

Texas could become the first state to require Bible readings in public schools. The State Board of Education is reviewing a plan that would add 11 Bible passages to English classes from kindergarten through 12th grade starting in August. The readings—like Psalm 23, the Beatitudes, and David and Goliath—would be taught as literature. The proposal follows a ’23 law calling for a uniform reading list in all schools. A preliminary vote is happened Monday, with final approval expected by April. Critics say it crosses the line between church and state.
