Dozens of residents and local officials walked down Fulton Street in Wharton last Wednesday for The Crisis Center’s annual “Walk A Mile In Their Shoes,” marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year’s event carried a more personal tone, with signs showing the faces of victims, including 32-year-old Kristen Chavez, killed by her husband in March. Her mother, Laura Bell of Bay City, urged others to recognize warning signs. The Crisis Center served over 1,000 local clients last year, reminding everyone that domestic violence remains a community issue demanding collective action.
