Council Seeks County Help Funding City Services

Two El Campo city councilmen are pushing for Wharton County’s rural residents to share costs for services they use inside the city. During recent budget talks, they argued county taxpayers should help fund parks, emergency communications, and roads within El Campo. The city’s $28.7 million budget, with a proposed tax rate of 49.144 cents per $100 valuation, is set for approval and would slightly raise local property taxes. City officials say the county already provides some services free, but Councilmen John Hancock Jr. and Tom Coblentz insist rural users should also help pay.
