Ricebird Stadium in El Campo will close for six weeks starting today for field renovations. The aging turf is being replaced due to safety concerns. The $1.15 million upgrade features Hellas Matrix turf, used by local stadiums and the NFL’s Texans and Cowboys. Key improvements include a cushioned layer for better shock absorption and drainage, plus a heat-reducing infill. The new turf, which comes with a 25-year guarantee, will save the district $120,000 in maintenance, and is expected to be ready by May 21st, in time for graduation.
