Council Votes to Restore Funding

El Campo City Council voted unanimously to restore funding for the Chamber of Commerce, but concerns were raised about how the money will be used. Councilman John Hancock Jr. questioned why 35% of the $54,000 in hotel/motel tax funds could go toward operations. City officials clarified that state law allows it, though Hancock called the amount excessive. The chamber must provide financial transparency, including an audit. The city had suspended funds in May 2024 after a theft report, and former chamber chief Rebecca Munos was indicted in February. The case remains unresolved.
