Maternity Care Deserts

According to a recent study by the March Of Dimes, approximately one in ten women who gave birth last year lived more than 30 minutes away from a birthing hospital. More than a third of U.S. counties are classified as “maternity care deserts,” with rural areas being the most affected. Eight counties in Texas, such as Goliad and Refugio, are among those facing this issue. Calhoun, Jackson, Matagorda, and Wharton Counties also have limited access to maternity care. The demand for care in Texas has risen due to recent abortion restrictions.
