The Bay City Regional Airport made an incredible discovery – they detected the world’s longest recorded lightning flash, also known as a megaflash. The airport houses a lightning detection system that is part of Texas A&M’s research efforts. Airport Manager James Mason expressed excitement about their detection, mentioning that they are the southernmost system for Texas A&M in the US. This megaflash occurred on April 29th, 2020, spanning an amazing 477.2 miles across three states, from Texas to Mississippi, beating the previous record set by Brazil in 2018.
