Over 300 high school juniors and seniors from various schools in Wharton County got a first-hand look at local government during Government Day. The students visited different departments and toured the courthouse and jail. The day ended with a hamburger cookout paid for by various sponsors. During the visit, the students heard from County Judge Phillip Spenrath, various commissioners, and other government officials who explained their roles. Commissioner The officials stressed the importance of voting, as demonstrated by Treasurer Audrey Scearce’s victory by just two votes.
